Antique holy image, gift for Catholic baptism
An ancient, historic image depicting John the Baptist baptizing Jesus with water.
This picture probably comes from Puchberg am Schneeberg. A charming Lower Austrian community at the foot of the 2,000 m high Schneeberg. The names of the two godparents are written at the bottom of the picture.
This picture was given to the newborn Anton Zwinz on January 13, 1907, on the occasion of his baptism. At a time when no one could have imagined that just seven years later the fateful First World War would break out. A world war with unspeakable suffering at the end of which the three monarchies of Russia, Germany and Austria-Hungary ceased to exist.
This picture is a memory of a time that was finally a thing of the past because of the First World War.
This picture is an ideal gift for all people who appreciate old traditions and values or are connected to the Christian faith.
You can also use this picture to decorate your own home and use this picture as an opportunity to talk to your guests about the time of the old monarchy.
The year 1907, in which little Anton Zwinz was baptized, was a historic year.
This year, for example, the Russo-Japanese War ended with Russia's defeat. And this defeat of Russia enabled England and France to form the so-called Triple Entente with Russia, which made the war against Germany and the Habsburg monarchy possible.
This defeat was immediately exploited by Great Britain and in the same year it concluded the Anglo-Russian Treaty of 1907: Great Britain and Russia signed a treaty that clarified their imperial interests and marked a rapprochement in relations between the two powers.
Interestingly, the Second Hague Peace Conference also ended in 1907. This conference led to the adoption of rules and agreements regarding the laws of war and the peaceful resolution of conflicts.
Our picture is in very good condition considering its age. It still has the original frame, the back of which is signed with the Habsburg double eagle. On the back there is also a rusty eyelet and a piece of old string on which the picture was hung. The picture is still protected by the original glass from 1907.
