Six small brass coasters, each with a hand-engraved ornamental design in the center and a continuous wave tendril around the rim. Together, they form a set that does not come from a factory template, but from a workshop where an engraving tool was wielded.

Material and Engraving

Brass, pressed and then engraved. The patterns follow the oriental interlace: continuous bands that intertwine to form stars and wheels, with small tendrils and leaf punches in between. Two basic motifs are repeated – a five-pointed interlace star and a six-part wheel pattern; one plate bears a different medallion of concentric bands. The cuts are made at varying depths, which indicates handwork.

Dimensions and Dating

  • Diameter: approx. 10 cm
  • Height: approx. 1.5 cm
  • Quantity: 6 pieces
  • Material: Brass
  • Dating: presumably mid-20th century, approx. 1950s–1970s

There are no manufacturer's marks. The dating is based on craftsmanship, engraving style, and signs of aging and should be understood as an estimation, not a documented statement.

Condition

Used, with visible signs of wear. Fine scratches in the center, dark tarnished spots and discolorations on several plates – one plate is significantly darker than the others. The rims show slight unevenness in places. No cracks, no breakages, no repairs. The plates stack neatly inside each other.

Use

As coasters for glasses and cups, as a tray for rings and earrings on the dresser, as plates for tea lights or in a group as small wall decoration. This type of brass tolerates polishing as well as retained patina – both are a choice, not a necessity.

The price is for the complete set of 6 coasters.

Shipping from Austria, carefully packaged.

Found at the huge flea market in Vienna, where more items change hands in a single day than in some shops all year round. Six plates that have stayed together – which is rare for coasters, usually one is missing in the end. We don't know who engraved them; but it's evident from every line that someone took their time doing it.
