A small, very expressive bronze figure of a smiling putto – perhaps also the Christ Child – with curly hair, soft features and a warm, naturally grown bronze patina.
Origin
On the back sits an old threaded screw for mounting: the figure was originally part of a larger devotional object – such as an altar cross, a reliquary frame or church furnishings. The small holes in the hands probably once held wire attributes, a halo or flowers.
Details & Condition
- Material: bronze or brass alloy
- Length: approx. 6.5–7 cm / 2.6–2.8 in
- Features: mounting screw on the back, pierced hands
- Date: 19th century (estimated)
- Condition: antique; lovely natural patina, age-appropriate surface wear
Who It's For
For collectors of sacred art and old metalwork, for a cabinet of curiosities or a nativity scene – a quiet, special Christmas gift.
Care
Dust dry only; do not polish the patina.
At the Megaflohmarkt in Vienna the little putto lay in a glass case among medals and buttons – with a smile that could be seen above all the bustle.
