This exceptional set consists of three antique awls from Austria, crafted in the period before World War I. The tools reflect the robust and durable craftsmanship of that era and are an authentic testament to traditional manufacturing.

All three awls feature a twisted tip (threaded form), making them particularly suitable for pre-drilling small holes in wood. This technique was often used to insert screws precisely and gently – a method still valued today.

The handles are made of wood and were presumably hand-shaped, which gives each piece an individual character. The metal parts show a beautiful, even patina that highlights their age without affecting their function.

Whether as functional tools, collector's items, or decorative elements – this set offers versatile uses. Especially in workshops, studios, or as part of a vintage decoration, these historical tools unfold their special charm.

🧠 Expert Assessment

Awls are among the oldest known tools of humankind and were already used in prehistoric times. The present examples date from the early industrial phase, when tools were still largely handcrafted.

Particularly interesting is the threaded profile of the tips, which indicates a specific use in woodworking. The very good state of preservation makes this set attractive for both collectors and practical applications.

Such original pieces from the pre-war period are increasingly in demand today – especially when they are preserved as a set like these. They are excellent gifts for craftsmen, history enthusiasts, or lovers of authentic tools.

At a flea market in Waidhofen an der Thaya, they lay in an old tin can, forgotten among screws and nails. Three awls, each shaped differently, each worn by a different hand. Who used them to sew, mend, and build?
