The wind tugs at her hat, and she holds on to it, laughing: this porcelain half doll shows a lively young girl with a green bow on her dress. A half doll rarely looks as spirited and full of movement as this one.

The Figure

She is an “arms away” half doll: her arms are molded free of the body, which was considerably more demanding to produce than figures with arms held close. Half dolls were very popular from the late 19th century into the 1930s and were used on pincushions, trinket boxes, powder boxes or as dollhouse decor.

Gmünd, the flea market by the border. On a windy morning, among flapping tarps, this girl stood holding on to her hat – as if she had been made for exactly that day. How many storms has she weathered without letting go? Perhaps cheerfulness is nothing more than a hat held on tight.
