A hand-carved linden wood putto — uncolored, unlacquered, completely himself. No gilding, no varnish, no factory. Just carver's hands, a piece of linden wood, and time. Austrian folk art from the Waldviertel, early 20th century.

Details

The bust depicts a cherub with gently closed eyes, a serene smile, and curly hair in flowing relief. The curved wings have concave hollowed-out inner surfaces. The face and hair are more finely crafted, while the body and back show intentionally rough carving facets — typical of the Austrian folk carving tradition. Warm honey-brown wood color with natural aging patina.

On the back: a small filed area with two drill holes — original wall mounting was attached here, no longer present. Can stand freely or a new eyelet can be easily attached.

Found at

Hand-picked at Rosenau Castle, Lower Austria. Made in the Waldviertel area. Shipped from Austria, carefully packaged.

Rosenau Castle and its surroundings have always been a place where things were made carefully and kept for a long time. This little angel was carved somewhere nearby — perhaps in a workshop, or at a kitchen table on a winter evening. Not for a church, not for a client. Simply because the wood was there and the hands knew what to do with it.
