Hand-Carved Wooden Icon Diptych, Saint George and the Madonna – Vintage Austria, 1970s

A handmade, two-part icon diptych from Austria. On the left panel is Saint George – considered the patron saint of riders and farmers, depicted as a knight with a spear slaying a dragon. Above his head is his name in Greek.

Motif

The right panel shows the Holy Mother of God with the Christ Child.

Technique

This two-piece icon booklet is hand-carved from natural wood. The two images were glued to the inside and then varnished, giving the impression that the picture was painted directly onto the wood. Both images are held together by a small hinge.

Dedication

This icon was apparently dedicated to a man named "Heinz."
