What Is a Rhinestone?

Rhinestones (“Strass”) are gemstones of lead glass, invented in the 18th century by the Alsatian jeweler Georg Friedrich Strass as a diamond imitation. They resemble diamonds in luster and play of color, without their hardness or refractive index.

Details

The main part of the necklace hangs from three thin polished chains. The practical magnetic clasp is decorated with a small pendant set with a pink rhinestone and a silver maker’s tag; the maker could not be identified. Two separate clasps allow the length to be adjusted freely.
