Chased Metal Chalice, Hand-Engraved Floral Motifs – Vintage Austria, 1960s

A decorative chalice of polished metal with hand-worked chased engraving. Versatile in use: fill with soaked foam for artificial flowers, use it as a candy or jewelry dish, or simply leave it unchanged as a standalone decorative piece.

Craftsmanship

The outside of the chalice is adorned with fine floral chased engravings, worked by hand – as are the decorations at the base. Small irregularities in the symmetry suggest the entire chalice was handmade, possibly as a journeyman's piece.

Gmünd. The chalice stood among toolboxes, as if someone had simply forgotten it there after a day's work. Look closely and it isn't quite symmetrical – a hand worked here, not a machine. Perhaps that's exactly why it has lasted so long.
