Quantity

Deep cobalt blue with a large golden bloom: this small vase comes from the Hungarian porcelain manufactory Hollóháza, the country’s third-largest after Herend and Zsolnay. A piece of European porcelain tradition in a handy size.

The Manufactory

Hollóháza, in northeastern Hungary, traces its history back to 1777 – when glass, not porcelain, was made there. Porcelain production began in 1831, first for industrial use. Since 1957 the manufactory has focused on household porcelain, tableware and decorative pieces like this vase.

Shape and Decoration

The front features a large gold floral motif, the back a smaller single flower. Foot and rim are finished with a gold band. The gold looks especially rich against the saturated blue – at home in classic interiors as well as in bold Maximalist Decor.

Heidenreichstein, the flea market that returns every year. The vase stood with its back to the viewer, only the small flower showing – the large one appeared only when it was turned around. How often do we miss the most beautiful side because we only look at one?
