Bright lemon-yellow enamel set in silvery metal: this trefoil (cloverleaf) crucifix pendant unites a symbol of faith with fine European craftsmanship. Each arm of the cross ends in three rounded leaves – a form that has stood for the Holy Trinity since the Middle Ages.

Front and Back

The front shows a finely modeled, silver-toned figure of Christ, topped by the INRI scroll. The yellow enamel lies over a textured ground and gives the cross its glow. The back is decorated with a fine engine-turned (guilloché) pattern around a central medallion bearing the Chi-Rho monogram (☧), the early Christian symbol formed from the Greek letters X and P.

Eisenstadt, the flea market. In a box full of medals and buttons, something yellow flashed, bright as a patch of sunlight. How many prayers has this cross heard, how often was it held in a hand looking for something to hold on to? Some things carry their light not on the outside, but in what they have meant.
