Some things are recognized not by their shape, but by their sound. This old bell is one of those objects that you hear first and only then truly see.
Origin & Tradition: Bells like this accompanied cattle, calves, or goats on the alpine pastures of the Waldviertel and the adjacent mountain regions. The colorful wool tassel under the leather strap – in red, green, blue, and beige – is no coincidence: It is part of the tradition of the Almabtrieb, when the cattle return festively adorned from the summer pastures to the valley in autumn.
Material & Craftsmanship: Folded and riveted iron sheet, internal iron clapper, dark leather strap with hand-stitched cream-colored seam and copper rivet.
An honest observation: The leather strap is narrower than one would expect for a full-grown cow. This bell may have belonged to a calf or a goat – or a wider collar was once threaded through this loop. I cannot give a definitive answer, but precisely this small uncertainty is part of the item's history.

Condition: Significant surface rust and oxidation on the iron, worn leather strap with intact stitching, faded but complete wool tassel. The clapper moves freely, the bell rings with a warm, full tone – a short video with the original sound can be found in the product gallery.
Era: Probably approx. 1920s–1950s. Accurate dating of handmade farm bells is naturally difficult, so I deliberately provide a range rather than false precision.
Found at the flea market in Heidenreichstein, Lower Austria – among old tools and forgotten household items, until it found someone again who wanted to hear its sound.
